Got a chimney installed on a steel roof in the fall. A few weeks ago snow was coming down off the roof and slowly sheared the chimney. Scary because I was running the stove at the time and had to shut off in a hurry. Called installer right away, he says it’s the heavy wet snow, apparently not the only ones with this issue.
Crew came back, now the guy wants $1K to fix it, blames the snow. Our feeling is that snow guards should’ve been installed and it was their responsibility to calculate the load. Looks like the bracing split completely. They keep blaming weather and our roof slope.
None of our neighbors had this issue.
Are we crazy for thinking it’s their responsibility or is this common? We could’ve easily had a fire.
