A few months ago we moved to Kansas and bought our first house. It was built in the 1970s that has a walk-out basement. Love the house, and as the weather is warming up we are spending more time outside.
The way the back patio is built has puzzled us. Here are a few pictures: https://imgur.com/a/b5utNl4 (with a pupper as a bonus!). We can’t figure out why there isn’t either a single slab or multiple rectangular slabs of concrete. Instead there are irregular concrete shapes separated by 2″ wooden [beams?][rods?]. Then there’s a section in the far corner that juts out even farther into the yard.
Can anyone tell what the original intent was? Was this common practice years ago or maybe a custom job? Anything I need to look out for in the future?
Happy to take more pictures if that would be helpful. Thanks!
