I am in the process of converting an existing carport into a garage, and the existing carport opening currently uses a flitch beam consisting on (2) 2×8 beams with a 3/8 steel plate. The span is 20’ and has a support post (lally column??) at the midpoint.
I’d like to use jack studs to reduce the opening to 16’ for a double garage door and to remove the support post. The flitch beam supports a single story eave shingle roof with a 10’ run with perpendicular rafters to the next beam which is also a (2) 2×8 with 3/8, spanning 20’ with no support.
Obviously before I knock out the post, I’ll get the official go-ahead from a structural engineer. But does anyone have experience with this?
