Japanese Maple – Did I kill it? : HomeImprovement

I noticed in the fall last year, not all the leaves fell off our huge japanese maple. Fast forward to now, those leaves are still on there and there are zero buds in the section. It seems 40% of the tree came back fine. but not the other half. I was hoping it would catch up but ive lost hope. We have another smaller japanese maple with the same markings, came back fully.

Any ideas whats going on or what I can do to save the tree. My wife and I are devastated, it will be a huge loss for us.

There are splotches all over the trunk, but doesnt seem confined to one area, even the part that came back has it. We did nothing different since we moved in 3 years ago. String of lights just got strung up 2 weeks ago, no hardware screwed into the tree.

Arborvitae: Just planted this last year and looks dead. Tried to have it in well drained soil, decent sunlight. Any kind of fertilizer I should try or is it dying too?

Any advice is appreciate.
