P trap clean out turned to total kitchen drain replacement, stuck at waste stub : HomeImprovement

Started by just wanting to clean out a p trap for a slow draining kitchen sink. During the removal I discovered most of the plastic and zinc slip nuts were splitting or already broke but not leaking.

I’ve been able to rough in most of the replacement pipe but I’m stuck on the p trap to waste stub. It’s got some hard blob on the top of the nut/pipe. Not sure what it is or what to do About it. Is it epoxy? Solder? Just some random gunk that doesn’t matter?

I’m not sure if the same gunk is used to seal the nut or not, my channel locks and wrenches can’t get a good grip on the slip nut.

Thoughts on how to proceed? Thanks
