Sanding down table to refinish it, the sander is peeling off the original finish down : HomeImprovement

We painted a table white over its original finish some years ago and now we want to remove the white and do it better this time. The paint is on the thick side so i am using a 60 grit on an orbital sander. It’s taking some elbow grease to remove the paint so if i want to usea higher grit to reduce these patches, it would be a lot of work.

Should i remove the entire finish layers and get to the bone? I was planning on sanding down to the light finish and then varnish it to retain the original look as much as possible.

Any tips? Thanks!
