Should these holes just be filled with caulk, or should they be repointed? I have 2 contractors insisting it needs to be filled with mortar, another says the others are trying to rip me off and just need silicone caulk. All part of a project to replace crown and rebuild top 3 rows. : HomeImprovement

The first photo is of the holes in my chimney. Do you think they need mortar or caulk? Any reason not to mortar just the damaged areas, or should the whole thing be repointed?

I’m also paying to have the first few rows demoed and rebuilt due to some spalling likely due to the deteriorated crown that is being replaced. If any of this is a red flag, let me know!
